| Somatic Therapy is based on the pioneering work of Moshe Feldenkrais who developed methods for restoring function to voluntary muscles of the body which had become dysfunctional through trauma, misuse or disuse.
The work of Somatic Therapy focuses on restoring a healthy relationship between the sensory/motor cortex of the brain and the voluntary muscles which are intended to be under the control of the cortex. By controlled application of resistance and intention on the part of both a trained therapist and the patient, a multitude of painful and/or dysfunctional situations can be restored to normal.
This work is used primarily for chronic (long-lasting) conditions which have not responded well to other approaches. Examples of the types of situations which have been successfully treated by Somatic therapy include:
Frozen Shoulder Chronic Neck and Back Pain Postural Distortions of long standing Joint immobility Any number of painful conditions due to muscular restrictions.
Somatic Therapy has also been used with great success in working with competative athletes in order to improve performance.
Somatic Therapy is also useful in treatment of many post-stroke patients in recovering full use of voluntary muscles.
